That’s what they said about cryptocurrencies aka Bitcoin.
Yes, that’s right, because US1 was behind sending bloom filters, see No bloom filters from US1 - #10 by edo
I guess we are still waiting for the big cleanup from EU1.
This is quite simple. To support a consumer market you need a separate division or the company.
You know, 20% of customers gives you 80% of profit, while 80% of consumers gives you 20% of profit (and requires much much much more support, likely 80% comparing with the first group).
Unfortunately, until Humanity makes AI with self-awareness, this trend will only continue. Because we humans do not like monotonous work. Especially if you invent a robot that will do all the work for you.
I’m thinking of “AI’s needs for huge resources” bubble. AI is here to stay and it will be impruved at an exponential rate, but the needs for huge processing power and storage space will not go hand in hand. DeepSeek already proved it.
So, that’s what I ment… don’t put to much hope in AI filling our storagenodes. I don’t see it in the next 10 years.
I was wondering… do you dev guys at Storj use some AI tools, modeling for a better storage system, etc? Or you use it just as a hobby for personal stuff?
I second this.
My Opinion:
AI and LLMs dont Need extensive amounts of storage.
The bottleneck is Computingpower.
The Trainig needs big datasets, but the resulting Models dont.
Maybe you need big amounts of Storage for checkpointing, but nevertheless, the use of AI-Models dont correlate with use of big storage amounts.
lets find a way for HDDs to make computation then!
those little bastards are so magnificent, im sure they can do it as well somehow!
after some Ai chat… no. nope. CUDA in GPUs are better for the job. i tried.
i mean nope. HDDs are made for data storage, and to access it.
Those who need Large amounts of data to store should happily use our service.
The world needs more and more space to keep theirs data.
So why they just don’t use us, if we have what they want?
My disks are half empty.
And now this - a 2 PB to be deleted. Nice.
i guess just storing the data don’t do the trick. Anyone can do that.
it must be related with something about access to this data, i guess?[spoiler]
Maybe take advantage of SNOs unmatched capability for basically free and powerful egress and make it dirt cheap to customers? so finally ppl will host sheettons of media on us finnaly * cough* * cough* at least for Storj Public network, coz no certs like SOC2 etc.* cough* and ppl who need us cant use us cough but the price always opens doors and make wonders * cough
I don’t know if you have a cough or are talking about porn
There is already competitors with free egress…
Everything is negotiable. You know, free is never free, somebody should pay for what become free to others.
Who but who, You should know better, due to 5 years of such conversations here on forum, that we SNOs pay for it already and that We mostly don’t use it even in 10% saturation Even in 5% upload(egress) of what we possibly can for what we already pay. And where the opportunity for storj lays to finally make use of it. (and that Cable internet, especially fiber is largely unlimited. i like to think about it like the limit is price included, Your ISP gives You for example: 1Gb/s connection, he should take into consideration You very much could use 90% of it all the time, because You pays for it, but were not talking even about that! i would be happy if Storj would make my connection egress up to avr. ~ 30% all the time!)
Did you hear about overselling? If you will use your connection at 90-100% alltime, probably you get provider call or a shaper without talks )
I believe somewere in the contract is mentioned in small characters “non-abusive utilisation” or something like that, with or without mentioning a limit. For mobiles, all vendors say “unlimited internet”, but if you carefully read the contract, there always is a limit, after which your speeds drop to dial-up levels. For fiber I believe they all have limits in place too, but higher than mobile internet.
Just for fun, I’ll ask my ISP providers too and I’ll read the contracts . I have 3, all fiber.
Fair Use Policy or FUP
you know during the crazy august test traffic window I think I had… 30TB of bandwidth used on AT&T? Mine was unlimited traffic but lower tiers still had the 1.2TB limit.
AT&T didn’t complain that time, perhaps surprisingly.
It’s just 100Mbit, no one cares about such speeds.
Imagine building with 200 apartments. Usually it’s connected to provider with 10Gbit uplink. For example half of apartments connected with 1Gbit tarif. Any of them getting maximum download speed, just not all at the same time. There may be even 1-2 users that using this speed almost 24/7. As long as they do not cause problems to other users, no one pays attention to them.
But when uplink is close to it’s limit, provider applying shaper and their speed is forcibly limited until they stop abusing the network.
Other story it’s call to provider after that - in 99% of cases they will say that they know nothing about that and there are no problems. You will be asked to check the speed and it will show 1Gbit on speedtest.net, because they do not limit the speed to such services. You just won’t be able to use the network as before for a while )
I like that I have to pay to get like 1 Gibt’s speed. But if I use the 1 Gbit uplink I pay for, it gets somehow called “abusing connection”. For me it’s just wrong. If I pay for a service why is it forbidden to use the service?
But i have a 20Gbit uplink on my server that is ‘fair use’ but I can use full speed but are limit to like 5Tb/Month for fair use. And yes I use more than 5Tb a Month but got never a message from them. (This Month I am at 5.9Tb)
im sorry a storj node is not for mobile internet IMHO.
Would be ashamed to join network with such.
Well then better for me. I dont have this problem. i can max my connection as much as i want, all month no problem, happy to take advantages over Your nodes and Your money then. sorry not sorry.
exaaaaactly. If the ISP’s network happens to be overloaded, then the speed will just drops temporarily. Imagine 250 apartments block. How many nodes need to be there to suck all the internet out of the building hahaha , not with the current use for sure.
Im pretty sure im the only node in the village (building)
[“the only gay in the village” its from TV series “Little Britain” lol]
Am at 2-5% total monthly “abuse” of my connection.
Would it matters for the IPS’s network if i start using 80-90% from now on?
And theres so much free capacity for the whole building unused?
Other SNOs wont just start spawning here by themselfs, if i will keep my mouth shut
Its not. some people over-exaggerating.
It will be abuse, when it will. Ultimately its for ISP to decide. Bad ones will be silly. Good ones are just smooth and problem-less. That’s why You don’t make contracts with bad ones, kids. Fiber preferred.
if you want guaranteed 1Gbit you buying business tarif with x10 price )
i’m uploading ~22-24Tb every day on my 3x1Gbit connections at home. sorry not sorry
Not so simple. If network overloaded mainly from certain users, sanctions will be applied over that users. Like if you limiting 2 users, other 248 will be happy
I guess the only reasonable way is as always “FAFO”.
i guess
but seriously, not gonna happen with 30% or even 50% of Your home cable capability.
Thats all i ask from storj.
Just 10x the egress and everything will be all right! (slowly retracts the gun)
