I’m done with this.
No more snark, no more back-and-forth
I’m just walking away from a sinking ship with a gaping hole in the hull. I’m putting my energy into things that actually matter instead.
Take care and live well.

To Storj Labs and Community:
After following the Graceful Exit process and reviewing the recent updates regarding payout policies and Chapter 11 proceedings, I have decided to pull the plug on my nodes right now.
When completed exits and earned payouts are left in limbo, and operators are effectively pressured into forfeiting their hard-earned money under the guise of “fast exits,” the trust is completely gone. Running hardware, electricity, and time under these conditions makes zero sense.
Consider my remaining micro-payouts as a farewell gift to help keep the lights on for a little while longer.
Consider this my official sign-off. Goodbye.
Best Regards

This thread exists to make sure nodes that don’t like the recent payout rate cut have an alternative that allows them to get out in just a few days without putting any customer data at risk. There is no malicious or hidden message behind that. Yes we reduced the payout rate and yes it is unfair that it gets applied on the next prepayment already. Here is your quick way out if you wish to.
With that background in mind I can assure you there is no need for you to keep your nodes running. The segment health report looks good and your GE signal was already included in that. Thank you for the clean shutdown.
Is there some way you can put up a web query where we can put in our node ID and see how the graceful exit is progressing? I’ve been an SNO for years and have advocated for STORJ with customers in the past. I truly hope the project pulls through and would consider coming back in the future. For now, the server we’ve been running on needs to be retired and a GE just makes sense.
Thanks for all the fish!
Nobody is pressured. Cost of running hardware does not disappear if you stop storj.
Stop bending the truth and playing victim for $15.
The shortcut doesn’t meant no payment at all, only remained held amount will be lost, the regular payout will go as usual.
Hello @dbyte,
Welcome back!
No. The GE process has changed since its initial implementation. After GE is launched, you only need to keep the node online for 30 days, with an online score of at least 80%. In this case, when checking the status in the command line, you’ll see 0% progress for the entire 30 days, and on day 31, you’ll see 100% or a disqualification (DQ) if you fail to keep the node online or the online score is below 80%.
Respectfully, it is not the concern of an SNO to care personally about customer data. That’s Storj’s job. We just provide a node and expect to be compensated. This shouldn’t be personal, it’s business. In my opinion, unpaid Fast Exit tries to make a business decision of an SNO shutting down early into a personal one. Allowing business to get personal allows companies get away with things that no company deserves to get away with, as we have seen time and time again around here.
Fast Exit requires time and effort from an SNO that should be compensated to some degree. If it takes 3 days instead of 30 how about being paid 10% of their held amount just as an easy example? Heck, maybe even bump it up to 15% as a sign of appreciation for not shutting down without warning. We’re talking about single digit dollars here so one could argue this whole thing is ridiculous but it’s more about the principle and good faith, which does actually matter in business. As it stands right now, Fast Exit is just doing Storj a favor for free and showing them good faith when, to my knowledge, they have shown us none.
They don’t have to do anything. They may choose to be concerned. And for those who are concerned: they have options. I can totally believe there are SNOs who have followed Storj for years: and personally wish them well: and want their exit to be as low-impact as possible.
If you’re not concerned, that’s fine. It’s your choice.
That attitude is corrosive. Society works because people routinely do things they aren’t strictly required or paid to do simply because it costs them little and helps someone else; reduce every interaction to “what am I obligated to do and what do I get for it?” and you end up with a society where nobody does anything for anyone unless compelled or paid — a miserable place to live.
Fortunately, most people don’t think or behave like that, which is why the risk remains small.
Tell me you drank the Kool-Aid without telling me you drank the Kool-Aid. This isn’t society, it’s a company. Your way of thinking is a perfect example of what I wrote earlier about letting business get personal and allowing companies to get away with whatever they want.
I completely agree and I am in also in that camp, but this isn’t a charity. We don’t run a soup kitchen here. We provide a service for a company and should be paid for that service. If this was Microsoft, Google, or Amazon doing what Storj is doing, nobody in their right mind would be onboard with this.
Yeah I bet a lot of people… if they have to leave… will do a regular GE. Large SNOs may have a lot of tokens being held-back.
A company isn’t some alien entity outside society. It is a group of people who formed a legal entity; they didn’t stop being people when they incorporated and gave the group a name.
Those people are still making decisions, dealing with other people, and relying on the same norms of good faith, reciprocity and basic decency that make society function. Calling it “business” does not remove any of that.
It’s a penalty for not doing graceful exit. If you want not to pay penalty — do graceful exit. So many words about nothing.
In that case, are there any other groups of people who formed a legal entity that you would perform free services for? Or just Storj?
Your services will be paid. Only the held amount will not in the case of a Fast Exit, and you can still receive it - keep the node online for the next 30 days after calling GE, and you will get not only payout for these days but also a held amount.
few things here.
However none of this has any bearing on the current topic:
Nice strawman you hung there.
