Of course they do. But no inverter can be connected to a country’s grid in standalone mode (ie self regulating). It always needs to be synced to the network. Don’t believe me? Ask your local electricity authority/company if they want the grid powered when they are working on it. The gas turbine gives you something to sync to, because exactly as you said: large mechanical rotor (=inertia) + regulated speed = keeps it stable.

I respect this. I can’t run any storage at the moment other than a few TB of SSD but I could run a free repair node if there was such a thing? If there was a docker image I would run it

The main problem with external repair workers is trust. They need read and write access to storj metabase.

This sounds like you have good relations with them. Out of curiosity, how does it feel to work with a court judge? I assume it’s rare for them to work with a commercial company with this kind of community.

I followed the meeting only partially. They talked about the business and taxes but I did not hear the word community.

That is no longer correct. There is an increasing number of grid-forming inverters which may even allow black-start capabilities on renewables should the need ever arise.
This has been an initiative further incentivised by the Iberian Peninsula blackout last year.

Lets get back to topic. Turns out I was wrong with my concern. We can take donations. So green light on that part. We are now going to figure out the details.

Won’t this trigger an enormous repair queue because all those pieces that are duplicates now behind the same IP and therefore not safe anymore?

Even if the pieces are still accessible behind a single IP address, why would the repair process start?

Only ingress will go down. No inpact on audit/repair and egress.

Oh, I had in my mind that the system will start spreading pieces if too much are behind one /24 network. Sorry for the confusion then!

Well then go ahead. These are my ideas so far, maybe not complete…:

  1. Make clear how much is needed. We are seeing $1m as minimum that is required for a year. How to Survive - without reducing SNO compensation - #6 by jammerdan
    It is probably not realistic to receive this much via donations but a target is helpful
  2. Let SNOs donate. Implement a solution that can go into effect already for the previous month. So that interested SNOs can use the funds already that are going to be sent for July.
  3. Find an easy technical solution for SNOs, maybe as easy as changing the payout wallet address to the Storj address via config setting to indicate change the wallet address back to Storj to indicate that thay give up their payout.
  4. Let anybody else donate: Make a donation address publically available so that donations are not limited to SNOs. Anybody should be able to donate if he wants to. I am thinking specifically of STORJ token holders that do not want to or cannot support the buyout but want to support the company.
  5. Maybe considering forfeiting the held back could help. At least technically this is an amount Storj owes the SNOs so it should be in the books. It could be that SNOs cannot donate directly but would be willing to give up their complete held amount or the 50% left.

In general, donating should be quick, easy, and universally accessible. Additionally, it must be widely communicated.
