Helping the network become profitable — what can operators contribute while staying viable? (calculator inside)

I did mentioned increase used space, you already going to have cost savings on RS and high traffic situations, you can change egress pricing for customers to be have a more competitive advantage if you want to.

$1.75 per TB used space
$1 per TB egress
$1 for audit and repair traffic

you are still saving money.

or

$1.85 per TB used space
$0.5 per TB egress
$0.5 for audit and repair traffic

Still saving money and having a better product for customer.

Russian PB whales will love that… :bottle_with_popping_cork:

You think so?

how about this?

$0.5 per TB used space
$6 per TB egress
$6 for audit and repair traffic

Maybe the question is, what in your opinion would not help?

Where do you see money saving here? This is way more expensive than the old pricing. For my own nodes it would increase my payout from $150 to $165. I would start scaling even faster. Both pricings would be about $165. On the second pricing the egress payment is too low to the point that I would downgrade my internet connection. That would reduce my payout to $160 but also reduce my costs by a bit over 5€.

Even if I knew, I would not tell for obvious reasons. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Fun fact this would lower my total payout. I would estimate $140 and thats before storj changes the RS settings to balance out used space and repair traffic. So yea that should match the rate I was posting earlier…

Don’t take the figures that I responded to alpharabbit, I am trying to figure out what he is saying.

I will respond on the figures I gave you, and we are having a debate.

The savings are on high egress clients, repairs and RS changes, so global used space goes down and you have competition on egress pricing, this is from a storj point of view
you can change RS to 29/45/53/74 and slowly get to a point of 43 or 41 whatever is more comfortable.

Stored data is more predictable than egress, that might be an advantage.

Do you have any official figures that we can rely on, if you want to help Storj we need to think broadly not your setup or my setup, that only comes into place if it is sustainable to keep the node or not.

Yes it might help you, up to a point, it might help me up to a point, it wont help everyone, it might not even be a good idea and nothing should change.

I am trying to match for the average, while making to possible reduce RS numbers and if possible make Egress more interesting to a customer.

Would this work?

$1.75 per TB used space
$1.5 per TB egress
$0 for audit and repair traffic

It was rhetorical, don’t even think about that one.

That alone is matching my current payout. I would start agressiv scaling.

Why we just not do first X$ on node not payd, give you needed discount, kill encorrage node multiplication?
++ some reduction on repair egress
instead /24 put /32 to stiil have less nodes on 1 IP, since /24 rule dont differe from /32 a lot, if someone have access to /24 ips it just put small amount of people to get more traffic.

we dont need to exclude anyone

I though we agreed you are the outlier, do you have Storj number we can rely on? I got no data on grafana.

Don’t post anything that could let a S3 competitor estimate the shape of an “average” Storj customer (such as how much they tend to spend on egress vs. regular storage).

Isn’t it about time to stop riding this dead horse? We understand that such solution perfectly fits your setup. No need to repeat.

you mean /32?

The network needs to be reliable.

Yes /32 I fixed that already. /24 rule give reliability only if no one have access to lot of /24 IPs, but all have them, so even geo feturing not work because we dont know where really data is. something like BGP AS can fix it, but storj need to develop it.

We started with:

  • Unpaid Trash

And then with hashstore we made it:

  • Unpaid Trash +
  • Unpaid Reclaimable

But now it sounds like your idea is?:

  • Unpaid Trash +
  • Unpaid Reclaimable +
  • Unpaid first-500GB

We’re stacking “Unpaids” like buffs in a video game: I’m gonna need a YouTube Guide on how to min/max :squinting_face_with_tongue: . Just lower the payouts a bit. Simple.

@Vadim @alpharabbit Aldo from now on, new nodes could be payed with delay, like 2 months delay, a new form of held amount, like pay whats earned, but hold it in case the node will quit abruptly. Could discourage “get rich fast” nodes, and would be much adequate collateral, You just need to keep Your node online coz Your last 2 months payments are on the stake - if You quit without Graceful Exit You loose it. how about that

(why, coz if we going to cut SNO payouts, the held amount program is taking too much for held amount for many many months, i doubt if anyone would want to try a new node with that… but if You always keep last 2 months a hostage, it scales with nodes payout too)

Dont wory i know about unpayd trash, I have about 30TB of not compacted files, because of some file errors on node prevent compaction. Nodes are full of trash, dont get new data. so dont worry i understand. But you not understand that fixed discount is better than discount from part of all, when nodes will rize you will understand.

problem not in people that go in and out, for 1-2 month it is drop in the sea. problem when people have several /24 on same hdd, in big scale, very big.
BGP AS can fix that also I agree. then no one also will not need lot of /24 Ips
possibility that several part will get to one place will be small. Even posiblility that it will go to one city will be small.
