Huge amount of trash data?

Yep, as AC says, I understand that these reservasions and tests are from Storj’s pocket, not payed by future customers.

Sure I get that but it doesn’t change the outcome. He called it a no no. → Customer has to go with his data somewhere else because his requirement for deal would be that the customer signs 2-3 months in advance. Mentioning that as a requirement will already scare off a lot of customers. The customers want to use the product the moment they sign.

This is why I don’t run a cloud storage business. Maybe I’m to narrow minded.

Honestly, I guess it’s not easy being an entrepreneur!
As a very risk-averse (probably by professional deformation) and utterly non-entrepreneurial person I am always in awe of people who go out there, take risks and make stuff happen…

Next month, when my occupied space has doubled, I will slap myself on the back of the head: “shut up, go to your corner; never question Storj’s decisions!”.

You’re right, US1 is missing data, still, if I am not mistaken, the EU always had more data than the US, so we can assume that probably 50% of used space was lots in just a couple of months.

I may be overthinking this, but isn’t the point of reserving capacity to have that capacity before everyone else? With 30PB of free space on the network, that would mean this supposed client wants to upload at least 30PB of data today. We’ll add on top of that the 10PB that needs to be deleted because it was free data.

On top of that we’ve had request to add as much space as physically possible, even building a couple of sheds in our backyards and requesting we are all upgraded to industrial power (lower rates, higher limits). (editor’s note: this is a joke, based on the request of how many available offline disks we have. I will not reply to any reply quoting this and refuting it).

Which leads us to this very important question: if the client is expected to upload 100PB of data today by the end of the day, what is his upload speed?
100PB @ 1Tbps = ~10 days.
100PB @ 10Gbps = ~926 days.
100PB @ 1Gbps = ~9259 days.

Either this whole situation is a very overblown “maybe”, or the client has very deep pockets. If it’s the first, then this deletion could have been a little smoother. If it’s the latter, as long as the drives keep filing up, more capacity will come online.

There is the third scenario of course, this could be a client for the commercial side of the network, in which case we are all just victims of shrapnel.

… eventually.

With the current vetting process it will take some time for new spun-up nodes to become of any use to the network.
“Just in case”, I have a couple of small incubator nodes running on a spare SSD I had lying around but I suspect the majority of people (notable exception of @Vadim , of course!) don’t have those…

I guess they don’t test the private network if the customer needs the comercial one. Dosen’t make sense. They would test the comercial nodes instead.

If the network needs to grow fast, I’m sure there are a couple of arrays that can be spun up by the end of the week for that capacity to come online. It doesn’t need any vetting, build the array, migrate the node to it, start filling up. No vetting.

Even if new nodes needed to be spun up, the vetting process could be sped up within a single update cycle by adjusting the percentage of new data going to new nodes. So again, no problem with unvetted nodes if there is the extremely urgent need for new capacity.

In a previous reply to me, they said that one of their goals is to benchmark the satellites, so they could do that on the public network as well (both public and commercial share the same satellites from what I can tell).

I was thinking to do the same, but for now, I filled all my slots, and I don’t want to buy new drives untill all I have is filled.

Exactly. We had that situation in the past where too much traffic went to unvetted nodes. It will be very easy to adjust that again and send more traffic to unvetted ones.
That is absolutely no problem (unless you send so much that if the vetted nodes turn out to be unreliable the network gets into danger). But normally no problem.

Storj: “Hey guys! We need to show potential customers we have lots of spare capacity: so can you bring more empty drives online now? They’ll be filled. Trust us”

SNOs: “Fill the drives we have online now… and we’ll add new empty ones. Trust us”

I’ve already hearted your reply, but here is another one

That’s the bottom line: Fill what is empty now, and we’ll add more. Out of the (checks stats)… ~4500 SNOs, if every one added a 20TB drive, that’s 90PB that’s available as soon as the drives get shipped and installed. Most SNOs would love to add way more than that. At 2x20TB drives each, that’s 180PB of available storage by the end of the month. 10 times the currently used capacity.

Don’t forget those SNOs who might not have yet all their space allocated. So it is not visible.
If you have already a 20TB drive but you have only allocated 5TB so far, then you could quadruple the space Storj sees at your fingertips.
There might be more space available than we all know.

SNOs: “This is a trustless network!”

And the SNOs are dancing and singing: “Use what you have, use what you have”

Sorry this is a very rude and dumb answer to a legit question.

Its Not the First time Storj Talks about more customers, more Data, more Money for us and so on. But it has not Happen.
You Said there is no signed contract, so it’s absolutely possible that Storj gets rid of all the testdata and the SNO are Left with a fraction of there income.

To be clear, i beliefe in the project and i am very happy if there will be the new big customers, but sometimes it’s legit to ask and to critizise - especially because of the last months.
