SNOs with lots of data... How?

Sorry I can’t agree on that. That is too far on the other end of the scale. I still have my principels that I can’t drop either. I will read a thread still as a thread even if it gets labeld as a suggestion later on. The best I can do is not take it personal and assume it is a culture difference.

I guess we just think differently in this case.

When a thread is posted by Storj saying that either
“Storj is considering reducing payouts for SNOs”
or
“Storj has made a decision to reduce payouts to SNOs starting on date xyz”

What are the expected replies?
“I don’t care”, “That sucks”, “Not again”. But also “I will shut down my nodes in this case, as it’s no longer profitable to run them”.
I don’t think anyone expects the opposite - “now that you’ll pay me less, I’ll start more nodes”.

As for the shutdown of the nodes - the operator can either warn Storj before doing it or do it without warning. Is doing it without warning preferable?
Similar - Storj can either announce the drop in rates or do it silently and hope nobody notices.
I think in both cases warning before doing it a good thing.

If my boss says that he will reduce my salary and I say that in that case I will start looking for another job, is that a threat? I don’t think so. I’m just giving him more advanced warning that I would have according to the law. Would it be better if I say “OK, whatever”, look for a new job silently, then give my boss the warning specified by the law?

The correct thing to do is calling graceful exit. Otherwise I am not going to repeat myself. We can talk about ways to shorten the graceful exit time. 14 days is something that can work. Maybe we can get that down to a week for nodes that don’t care about the held back amount but still want to make sure no customer data is at risk.

People that are still saying that this is too long and they will leave ungracefully should not expect a thank you from my side. It is as simple as that.

Isn’t the only difference how early the repair system may activate: if it’s even triggered at all? If there are lots of pieces then a node leaving does nothing immediately.

There’s no reason to change GE wait times. Either the SNO leaving wants a GE payout or not. The person may have a preference: the network doesn’t care.

The difference is this. If people warn Storj before quitting (whether they plan to do GE or not), Storj may change the decision to reduce the payouts, if they see that a lot of people are planning to quit.
If people quit without warning (again, with GE or not), then Storj will only notice nodes disappearing after the fact and will have to do something about it (or not, it its not a lot of nodes).

As for doing GE vs not, well, that depends on whether it makes sense to do it and keep the node running for a month (with even stricter uptime requirements IIRC) to maybe get the held back amount or if it makes more sense to forfeit the held back amount and shut down immediately.

I guess one way to motivate the node operators to do GE instead of just shutting down is to offer to pay them in the old rates for the month they do GE. Let’s say the lower rates kick in on the first of the month. So, if I start GE a day before that, my node gets paid for storage (no new data, but for the current data) and customer egress (not repair egress) using the old rates for the one month, after that the node is out of the network.

GE is (financially) pointless for existing nodes in my opinion. Held back is a pre-petition claim and therefore it must be claimed by court. Even for the largest SNO this is unlikely worth the paper work.

You cannot expect that people being profitable for several years (otherwise they’ll leave long ago) will wait additional week or two.

GE is the warning to leave. Everything else is really just ultimatums. do this or else (or in this case don’t do this or else)

GE is not warning. It’s leaving. And as I remember once started it cannot be cancelled.

No it is like on work, if you leave, you need to tell your employer you go and work for some time. then you get your last paycheck. But if you go away abruptly without warning emplyer dont have to pay you last paycheck

The point is that GE cannot be cancelled. On work after you notify your employer about your plans to leave you can start/continue discuss salary and working conditions. And you can rethink and stay. GE is final shot. Node can’t stay after it started.

Remember when STORJ devs actually had a poorly/garbage working GE system. It would distribute shards from the node itself. But Alas, it wasn’t ‘priority’ (as so many other things) so they just took the code out and left it; only delegating a 30 day timer - solution! (NOT a fix to the existing code nor a real solution, but forcing a simplistic default to the repair function rather than just fix the code) HAHA at least they could have put a clock timer to post updates to the confused SNO that was exiting… lol…Quality decision there.

Can that code not be brought back, and updated???

Only then would any SNO know if their patience actually counted, aside from the final and rather trivial monetary reward? As well, STORJ would at least have some telemetry to know wtf is going on, as an alternative to a bunch of employees biting their nails and “praying.”

Hallalujia!

Is this a challenge?

(sorry, couldn’t resist  )

Actually, it’s a warning. You may contact support to cancel it.

The new GE can be canceled but requires a support request.
