One of the Power Utilities here (locally) offers access to the wholesale power market. To be a part of this we pay a separate monthly fee to participate in this rolling market and get numerous benefits to keep our electricity bill down.
A fee, a membership, to be a part of the distributed network - to be a part of Storj. Data fees are an addition, as separate line in the accounts that may only break even. The membership is one way forward.

So the node operators would have a bit less money in their pocket, after committing to be a member? What if the membership fee was tailored to the amount of useful work a SNO was doing. Maybe say $0.25/TB/month?
If we want to keep payouts at $1.50/TB/m… but charge a $0.25/TB/m “Membership Fee”… that sounds reasonable.

That is so negative. That passion - that vision that was present in the early days of Storj. That is what created this project. Hell it is really something. And we are part of it if only we could see it.

I like the idea, but from my culture’s perspective, membership without any additional benefits (even a hint of elitism or anything similar that would make a member proud or even happy) is worthless. So, please explain in more detail how this would work and who it’s intended for?
I’m not criticizing; I’m genuinely curious. I’ve never lived in a society where membership in any narrow community was valuable in and of itself. It’s just that our culture doesn’t have a history of that (well, maybe with the Pioneers or Komsomol members? But members of those communities had real chances to become leaders of the country, had real advantages, and almost never lived in poverty).
Not membership then - but partners. Yes membership is probably against the Open Source ethos.
But we split off partners and the Data. The Utility that I refer to offers a base membership fee for access to an algorithm that delivers the best value for your household power demand and return feed from solar panel or battery.

We could have the full story and learn all the secrets that are currently being kept hidden (maybe chapter by chapter, for example, selling us an effective management method with real examples, like how to quietly fire employees behind their backs, how to pay yourself bonuses at Storj, the real purpose of Inventium, etc.). This could make for tons of content that people actually want to hear.
We could also consider a series, maybe a film or a book…
