I can get 2.5GB connection and reliable speeds with my house wired Cat5E, and I did not test it for anything higher due to limited hardware at my disposal at the time. My longest run is probably 175 feet of wire, assuming it was a fairly straight path. I did not test that one. None are shielded and I know they run with the electrical wires, not good.
But your point is well taken, test your current cabling to see if it can handle a higher speed reliably before assuming it needs to be replaced. But wait!, that sounds like someone would need to use common sense. That is a rare talent these days.
Your LAN speeds don’t seem to align with what’s out there: everyone will probably pick “1000Mbps..1225Mbps” or “>2Gbps”. (Unless the are still 10/100 networks out there?) Maybe…
This is a post about LAN speeds - so latency should be sub-millisecond no matter what gear you have.
OP asks about LAN…
…poll posted about Internet…
…pointed out the lack of LAN poll…
…LAN poll added… with Internet speed options…
…latency mentioned…
…but talking about Internet again?
Some day… $(DIETY} willing… people will read the Title of the post
Why the sudden jump to 2 GBps as the last option? That’s way more than 2 Gbps. Was that meant to be a poll about WAN speed and not LAN speed?
For my LAN, it’s mostly 1 Gbps. I’m just starting to introduce 10 Gbps devices. I’m also playing around with channel bonding a bunch of 1 Gbps for fun because I have the parts lying around. I have several 26/28 port 1 Gbps switches.
