For no apparent reason, im interested in what speed LAN (Not Internet) people are running at HOME. People wanted a Poll, but the stories of how/why are interesting as well. Maybe you ant to upgrade, not sure how - or which equipment to get.
I’m on 10G SFP+/DAC now… but if I had to do it again I’d start with single or dual 25G adapters because they’re affordable… and backwards-compatible with 10G switches.
Plus if your core network is 10G… there are small cheap 2.5G-with-10G-uplink switches you can hang off the side if you need some slower ports.
Still one card for glass fibre will cost me around 100€. I would need the for both my computer and server. But still I would rely on wifi for my uplink, because I have no way to get fibre to my room. (And only 400Mbit/s connection) So this wouldn’t really make sense for me. 1Gbit is enough for me. (Even when it limits the connection between my server and my pc to 1Gbit).
Currently on 10Gb ‘backbone’ with a mixture of fibre and copper, and then devices hanging off that with a range of 100Mb to 10Gb.
I’m looking to upgrade to 25Gb or more as my ISP is offering a cheap upgrade to that, but the price of 25Gb switches and a few NICs is somewhat off-putting for now so I’ll wait a bit longer (and probably then be looking at 40Gb+ )
I’m running everything network related on 1G, and my SAN is bonded 2.5G on a separate network. It was running bonded 1G before, but I found that power draw on newer 2.5G was a smidgen lower, and since I had to get additional cards anyways (and the price was roughly the same), I decided to upgrade.
I see absolutely no reason to upgrade beyond these speeds for my current purposes.
I used to have a couple of x520 cards, but they were hot, power hungry and I did not properly use them.
