I am happy to pay the $40/year for the extra performance and safety.
With 3x 20Gb Drives we can make a 1x3 Raidz1 = 40gb Roughly Usable, or a 1x2 mirror with hot spare = 20Gb.
With 10x6Gb, we can make:
1x10 Raidz (54Gb), Raidz2 (48gb) - Slowest, riskiest)
2x5. Raidz (48gb), Raidz2 (36gb)
3x3. Raidz (36gb)
5x2. Mirror 30gb - Safest, Fastest
And many other combinations if one desires multiple arrays for different use cases.

I am using absolutely the cheapest drives I could find used but still working.
Currently using 4x Seagate 4TB plus one HGST 4TB and one WDC 4TB. No bad sectors on them (yet). Seagates are above 50,000 hrs mark on each.
My price per TB is currently £7.40 (that’s $9.74). That include items I exchanged/sold to obtain this setup (for example bought SATA HBA, received wrong one then good one, sold both with profit half a year later), and required items I bought and hold currently - 1x LSI SAS HBA and 2x SFF cables.
