Where does the encryption takes place? S3 Gateway

I don’t understand where the encryption/data split takes place, when using the Storj-hosted S3 Compatible Gateway. Are the files solely being sent to the gateway via https or are there more security mechanism in this process? Whats the difference in using the self-hosted S3 Gateway?
