Building a small server. What server system should I use?

Hey All! New to the community.
Been trying to build a small DIY server for basic media and document backup on an older PC I have laying around. The specs are nothing to write home about Its small form factor acer from 2009 with 8 gbs of ram and 3 harddrives. One is a 128gb SSD I use for a boot drive the other two are 1 tb HDD I have salvaged from some old computers I got at work.

I know there is better equipment out there but I am more of a tinker-er than a professional. I understand how a NAS works for the most part but I am having trouble deciding which system is good to learn on. I have tried TrueNAS core before but I wanted to be open to Linux systems as well. I have tried standard Ubuntu with a raid but it seemed clunky.
Final goal was a media server with plex for all my movies and tv shows but I also am open to just a storage system that is accessed through file explorer on windows. It really depends on what you guys recommend for a beginner set up.

Thanks in advanced

Welcome to the forum @Newguy91 !

Are you going to use Storj for any of those backups ?

I am not sure! I have never used this system before. I was under the assumption this was an open forum for discussions about Cloud base storage solutions. More looking for advice on a budget free option to be honest.

So, that isn’t what this forum is for. Storj is a company that sells distrbuted object storage and AI service. You might want to try the TrueNAS forum, one of our partners, for advice on setting up hardware to run a NAS as they would have more expertise.
