Considering HAMR Drives for My Storj Nodes – Concerns About Vibrations?

Hey everyone,

I have two full Storj nodes that I’m looking to migrate to new drives, and I’ve been considering the Seagate Exos ST28000NM000C-FR (28TB, SATA, Factory Refurbished) since they offer a lot of capacity for the price. However, I know these are HAMR-based drives, and I’ve heard they can be more sensitive to vibrations and environmental factors than traditional PMR/CMR drives.

My concern is that I’d be adding them to a server case with 10 other spinning disks, which means there will be plenty of vibration and heat to deal with. Does anyone here have experience running HAMR drives in multi-disk setups? Are there any specific precautions I should take to ensure longevity and stability?

Thanks!

Also yes I know to “only use what you have”, this purchase would be made with money I made from storj. So please don’t mind.

Those drives are designed to use by the hundreds in enclosures: some vibration and heat from surrounding HDDs is expected. Every piece of marketing for Exos mentions “hyperscale” or “high-density” or “massive scale” or “big data” or something

If you have some air moving over them so they don’t cook, they’ll be fine.

I would wait.
EU1 cleanup still continues and the trash is still piling up - 27% of all the stored data here so far. Quite a significant hit I would say, and even the ingress we see for the last day isn’t enough to overcome the cleanup.
I was also taking a look at the stats today and the EU sat has ~twice the amount of accounts registered, but 4 times less data, so not much action going on in this region it looks like.

Regarding the HAMR/MAMR, I do believe I did read somewhere some manufacturer had some issues developing it. I would stay clear of this technology for now, as it is quite new.
You can get 5 year warranty, so no issues there, but if the drive fails you might loose the node.

Since zip mentioned it: I’m 100% in favor of finding a way to give Storj more space when a drive fills. If the Storj network every offers you some data… and you reject it because you’re full… you’re turning down money.

TL;DR; If you don’t always have some free space to offer the Storj network… you’re doing it wrong :money_mouth_face:

Good point. Thanks. I will consider it

Okay, I will wait a bit and see after current trash cleanup.

I like your approach, but have to object .
The drives won’t be any more expensive down the road, quite the contrary as the economy is slowing down significantly, at least in Europe.
Having something to invest at these uncertain times is in my opinion much better than having a drive that will be quarter full in six months.
And try selling that drive these days. That market is gone, at least in this part of the world.

I am not fully sure i agree with that - i have been selling alot of drives second hand recently, here in EU.

I hear what you’re saying. However, OPs drives are full now: a certainty. They’re certainly rejecting uploads. They certainly aren’t working towards higher payments in the future. They’re turning down opportunities.

To say we’re in uncertain times… well… they’re always uncertain. To say tech will be cheaper in the future…well… you know what I’m going to say about that too  . To question how full the Storj network will be in the future… it could go down, absolutely. But it has been around for years now: and which way has usage been trending?

If you want to be in a better position in say six months: you have to take action now. Waiting for the future to become clear… just means you never act. If you have a healthy node… that has grown to capacity… give it more room and try to earn higher payouts.

I much agree. I am looking at increasing the space for sure - will just wait for current trash to clear.

The drive it currently runs in is a second hand, shucked 10TB disk- 9TB usable. And it has been filled for a bit now. and has paid for itself over 2 times now.
And all “money” i would spend on a larger disk will be from storj payments.
And the “old” still fully working 10TB disk, will be waiting for my next storj system build.

So i do see it as a win/win - but i am just waiting for trash to clear before making a decision - and then i need to consider if i want to risk a HAMR purchase.
