is it safe to say that nodes 3.2 tb and 5.2 tb make around 1 dollar per month in the same /24?
Yes, if they are full or at least filled enough to earn that amount. And keeping in mind you have to have enough earned to beat the monthly threshold for payouts, otherwise it will carry over to the next month, etc.
is it frowned up to say ok i want 300 per month i can setup 300 nodes?
or to have 1 big node that does 1 dollar per every 3 tb? or 5?
The way it works is that you get paid for the amount of data your node is storing. The rate is 1.50$ per TB of storage, and 2.00$ per TB of egress.
You are not paid for simply setting up a node with that amount of space available, rather you are paid when that space actually gets used to store paid data.
It is up to you to decide how you want to setup your nodes. You may create 300 nodes or 1, what really matters is how much data you are storing. Arguably (without getting into raids, caches, etc) the best aproach is to simply set up a node for each of your hard drives. It isnt advisable to have more than 1 node per HDD. In addition, as traffic is divided into subnets, having multiple nodes in a single network wont give you any advantage.
In your case, two nodes with a total capcity of 8.4TB may have earnings of up to 12.6$ per month for storage (ignoring garbage and assuming 100% space usage, which takes time to achieve), plus some additional earnings due to egress, which will depend on network conditions, but a ball park figure might be about 10% extra.
I have oversimplified some of the concepts as there are a lot of variables and caveats on how hosting a node works, but it should still provide a good starting point. The forum is a very good resource if you want to learn more about how everything works.
do not get me wrong this is me venting not against storj infact i believe in the project that why i am asking… why does it have to be so complicated, most answers sound so shady lol like ya do it but you wont earn a cent or do not or whatever… end of rant lol
ok here is my situation and the reason I am asking because i can very easy setup 300 tbs of space. I know i do not need to do so all 1 shot but i have the space just need to get harddrives spining as i fill them.
rought estimate are those able to do 12 or under a month? if so i can setup more like them or 1 more node that i can make grow as jbod or i have enough processor power in 1 machine to run a bunch of 3 to 5 tb nodes. I do not want to get rich but i want to have a good under 1k income dripping in to a savings account hehe one can only get older and smarter you know.
a word of caution, it used to be very hard to fill up a hard drive with data. I think it took me over a year to fill up a 8TB hard drive. Plus remember it’s 1.5 years until a node has graduated to not having payment held back.
Currently, there is a lot of test data sloshing around. So it’s easier to fill a hard drive. But harder to keep it full because the large amounts of unpaid trash reduce effective capacity by 25% or 50%. We don’t know when the test data will be stopped, or if it will be replaced by real customer data in similar patterns.
And storj did reduce payments on both stored data and egress bandwidth significantly last year. There are no plans to change payments in the future, but those plans could change.
I would caution against this being an easy money maker.
some users have gone big, either individually or commercially. see www.storj.dk for a beefy setup
I wouldnt recommend running a single node against a JBOD in a raid/stripped configuration. One drive failing will bring down all your data, thats why the usual recomendation is to run 1 drive per hdd, that way you dont lose data to parity (at its not needed due to expansion), and a single drive failing will only make you lose that drives capacity.
How long will the drives take to fill up? Hard to say as it depends on network conditions. Bset approach is as you say to run one drive at a time and see how it goes. With that you will also get a better understanding of how everythings works and be able to decide if you want to bring in the rest of the storage or not.
Keep in mind that after creating a new node, part of the earnings will be held back (75% months 1-3, 50% months 4-6, 25% months 7-9). After 15 months, you will get 50% of the held earnings back. Then after that if you graceful exit, you get the remaning 50%.
While it sounds complicated, at the end of the day it works just as it sounds. You setup a node to store data and you get paid. There are some caveats as I have explained before, mainly being:
- You only get paid for data being stored (+ all egress), not the capacity available.
- For the first 9 months, part of the earnings will be held back.
- Part of the used space in the drive will be used for trash, which can take a bit to get deleted, and is not paid (this is currently kind of an ongoing issue, which hopefully should improve as time goes on).
I would say that other than that, there are no other major caveats on how the system works, even if there are currently some bugs floating around which can make everything a bit confusing.
I will not vouch for or against Storj, I believe that if you want to do a medium-scale deplayment as you suggest, you should do your own investigation and decide if its worth it or not. Other than that, Im happy to help you if you have any questions.
ok one last question based on my images. does that mean i will see lot less soon or is that good usage ? average sucks give me a bone to chew on please
When looking at the dashboard what really dictates how much you are getting paid for is the average disk usage.
So based on those values (1.57TB + 1.91TB), assuming they stay like that the rest of the month, you would get paid 1.31$ on storage (5.22$ for the month, minus 75$ held back, assuming your nodes are younger than 3 months).
Also, keep in mind that depending on your payout method (L1 vs zksync-era), there is a minimum balance you must have for the payment to be made. If you dont reach the threshold, it will accumulate over to the next month until you reach the minimum amount.
This month, at least for my nodes and as reported by some other SNOs, the US1 satellite has not been sending usage reports. What this means is that if your average usage graphs are not accounting for the usage in US1, then your real average used space is higher, therefore you will be getting paid more than the numbers I just gave.
There is also the fact that I mentioned before about garbage. Garbage can cause some of the 3.2TB per node used space to include some data that isnt paid, which is why your average used space is lower than the actual used space in the HDDs. This garbage is supposed to be deleted and new data will come to fill its place.
I suggest checking out http://www.th3van.dk/

50% physical not used space. Real payments are way less than that: http://www.th3van.dk/storj-earnings/2024-08-All-servers-earnings.txt
ok ok. you convinced me. not worth it. I am going to shutdown what I have. Like I said all I get from responses is why bother.
cheers guys thanks
I would suggest to use Realistic earnings estimator, it may help to get an idea how long it may take to fill up all free space and how much you may earn.
Thanks. I did and i am back with 28 tb i just finished setup. So i will let it run untill cows come home numbers looked good and it is a machine tha needs to be on anyways all the time.
