As the title I have loads of disk with no bandwidth, is there anyone who has loads of bandwidth but no disks? England, near Swindon
If the disk space is low, then your node likely do not have uploads, or they are rare (when some trash is cleaned up), this looks normal, if there are uploads at all. My nodes are always full, sometimes when the trash is cleaned up, the bandwidth resumes and filling quickly what’s was recently cleaned.
Looks like an expected behavior?
The other bandwidth usage could be egress, and it could be important what pieces your node is storing. If that are pieces of the media files, they would be downloaded independently of the fullness of the node. My nodes have a such egress traffic. There are also a repair traffic (GET_REPAIR
), it is used the egress too.
You’re not based in England, I thought
No, I’m located in Asia, but my nodes are in St.Petersburg, it’s pretty close to England. At least I think the same gate is used and the latency should be similar. To my nodes it should be even worse.
However, of course it depends on the customers’ location. Their uplink uploads and downloads to/from the fastest nodes to their location.
I’m not sure how that would work, would I send the disks to Asia and then you take them to your nodes? I’m not sure about the import rules between EU and UK at the moment
No… I mean, that I do not live in St.Petersburg, where my nodes are located, so sending disks to Asia would only increase the latency (I also do not have servers here and didn’t plan to…).
However, here (in Asia) should be other customers I believe… I didn’t check.
But being close to Europe (the most concentrated traffic In my opinion) is a good thing.
I get the feeling we are talking about different things so I will try again…
I have lots of USB/SATA disks 12TB, 14TB, 16TB, 18TB but I can’t use them for storj as the internet bandwidth at my house is poor (50Mb/10Mb). I am asking if someone would like to run these disks as storagenodes and share the profit.
I would expect them to be a current operator who has full disks and plenty of internet bandwidth to spare, to make it worthwhile
Do you take into the account, that your nodes used by real people?
Their behavior is not predictable. If they want to only upload (like backups), they would do so. If they want to share the media files via their site - it’s up on them too.
So, in general, have a good quality of the network connection and good storage doesn’t guarantee, that it would be used at full…
For anyone that already has the compute/IP/bandwidth for Storj nodes… raw HDD space is so cheap and plentiful that it may be hard to convince them to rent drives from you. Maybe consider colocation: like have a dozen of your drives in a 2u server someplace - where the earnings of say 150TB of nodes would more than pay for the hosting costs?
