the captive portal hijacks dns and redirects every request to their ad server. The http: server gave HTTP response to HTTPS error is because they can’t hijack the tls certificates and must serve the ads over http instead of https.

It is because of that. When I read your first message, my first thought was that it was maybe a captive portal, like on hotel wifi. Since those capture any first request before being identified and serve a page to log in with some code. Essentially turning any https request into necessarily an http request as they can’t have certs for just any domain. My guess is that this ad router works in the same way. Unless you can except specific devices from that behavior, I think you will have to leave that function off to prevent issues.
