I guess there no need to have 99.99% uptime (yet), let just self hosted a satellite and leave it there, 90-95% uptime is good enough for hobby scale (you can improve it later) and congrats on getting this far.
that is also more or less my plan, run it under a dynamic domain name (like duckdns.org)
have some people test it (both as customers and storage nodes). before that even test it myself so i’m sure it works just somwhat “reliable”
what i do from there i ‘m not sure of
i could register a domain and put the first satellite to sea. but that reqires a lot of time in support, that is no problem.. the problem comes when or if it generates profit. the big decision is then if i should also register it as a business (i’m forced by law if it makes 50K DKK not in profit but income alone).
Also i got my disability pension for a reason and it took almost 10 years of testing my work ability etc and even thou i now found a income working from home (mostly, except the now and then trip to server hosting location) could trigger a new eval that is anything but nice. the law says i’m allowed to work on the side, but with very small fine print they also says not to much or we will take the pension away. its fair if you ask me, but the only thing the law does not say is where the limit is….
that is why i do it for the fun of it right now

it will take at least another month or 2 before i have the satellite done, then i figured i could as well add config via webinterface to the storage node too

While you are at it can it be done so that optionally at a later stage additional ways for paying SNOs can be integrated? I am thinking of global mass payment providers like I have listed here, but also e.g Wise etc.
The main problem with these providers is the monthly subscription plus a percentage and/or fixed fee per account. This is unprofitable for any startup or with low profit margins.
Especially if your income depends fully on your customers’ use of your services.
on top of that people like wise just take an example do no accept EU drivers license and goverment issued health card, so they are out, i have tried to use them personal in the past to send money from DK to UK and ended up using the bank
paypal was the only i could figure that did accept the goverment issed forms of ID’s i have (and that my bank also accepts) and they do provide a mass payout option
Unfortunately, PayPal has its drawbacks: not all service providers can accept payments using it, and not just those in embargoed countries.
PayPal has a number of internal quirks that allow them to deny payments to perfectly legitimate customers.

I am just suggesting to leave room for other payment ways so they can be integrated if required instead of hardcoding something that can’t be changed forever.
But I think they’ve improved a bit and arent anymore as bad as they were used to be. So many reputable companies today are offering Paypal which would be unlikely if they wouldn’t get paid properly on a regular basis.
Also Paypal is not above the law. In the worst case you would have to sue them.
not that i know of, both our drivers license and the health card have a uniq number on it given at birth so they can in effect be paired together. the health card have my adress printed on it. this is why banks accept it as ID, but you have to give them both

for now i’m just doing this as a “small” experiment: can i get a more user/admin friendly satellite going with full web interface config etc so that it can be run entirely from a web browser after the initial start in a terminal

PayPal is typically offered by merchants for payment of their goods and services. I don’t know of many companies offering this payment method to contractors for their services. It’s generally considered a somewhat shady method for such purposes.

Yes, but you can at least receive them and exchange. It’s not the same when you cannot receive your money at all. So, I would like to suggest to have not only PayPal, but also a crypto payments, if this is allowed by your local laws.
By the way, you actually maybe can pay with STORJ tokens for the food using services like Bitrefill with a Gift cards or using a crypto cards like offered by Bybit and many similar exchanges.

Running community/private satellites gets interest every once-and-awhile. It sounds like the hardest part is finding customers… that trust the setup enough to pay to store data in it. But it could be an opportunity for someone great at sales and marketing!
i just discovered that to comply with anti money laundry law inside EU, i would have to collect the nodes name, address and some sort of personal id number and report it to a central EU system that then sends off info to each country (only those inside eu) so both AML and income report is taken care off
i bet not many nodes are willing to give up on that and that is also a part of why storj uses crypto… dont say a bad stinking idea cant be a good learing leasson
For that you may try to use one of payouts processors, links were provided by @jammerdan multiple times here on the forum. So they would do that for you, but you need to check.
i know both stripe and paypal have the features needed, and its not so much that
the satellite could be modded to do it for me, its more how many of the nodes (if any) that are willing to give up the information
They will be forced to provide this data to your payment processor, just like they would with a bank or exchange—identity information (KYC), work or business permits, tax obligations, W8-BEN forms, etc. Naturally, at your expense. They may have the ability to shift these costs to a contractor (SNO, in this case), but someone will definitely pay for it.
yes but that does still not answer the likelyhodd that the storage nodes are willing to give up that information
