More reviews! The PCIe version is pretty slick: the only external cable you may need is a very short one to the HDMI port. And there are tons of consumer motherboards out there with an unused PCIe x1 port to mount/power it.
PoE on the pcie thingamajig is pretty cool. I was about to write that power can be dropped if power supply went to sleep so it would have been silly, but PoE solves it.
What I’ve found is that as long as my power supply is physically toggled on… even if the main PC is off… it’s still providing a trickle of maintenance power to the motherboard. Enough for the PCIe NanoKVM to live off of. So I haven’t needed to supply it with PoE or external USB-C power.
I think most modern motherboards support this (or at least have it as a BIOS option).
The fact you have power/reset control, and can remotely provide ISOs to boot from is pretty slick. I did an Ubuntu reinstall remotely with no issues. Normally you’d need a server motherboard with ILOM/DRAC/IPMI (or equivalent) access to get into the BIOS and boot-from-USB.
