Open sattelite for academic torrents

I read it is possible to host your own sattelite?

Imagine:
Someone (that has time on their hands) creates a sattelite where SNO’s can offer some storage and bandwidth for free. The storage is exclusively used for https://academictorrents.com/ or similar (currently the available data is stored many many times across the globe, instead of just 1 copy with erasure coding, imagine the global savings).

Only an administrator can upload/add data. Everyone around the world gets free access! The 2024 version of the libary of Alexandria!

You could probably already get started if all large universities offer part of their current on-prem storage. I for sure would offer part of my storage for such a project.

It is possible!

The documentation for managing such a satellite is not very good, or in some places, doesn’t exist at all. But the code exists and is open.

You may do it already:

Can we assign how much storage to make available to one specific satellite?
I’d be quite happy to host some data for free but would want to be able to control how much free data I can store on my nodes…

No, as far as I know. So, seems only to create a separate node which would be available only to one satellite.

Fair enough. Thank you, Alex :slightly_smiling_face:
