Rightsizing Storj Network Payout Rates

It all new nodes, some people printing new nodes, to get more data.

We’ve dropped around 1300 nodes in the last month - it’s working :tada:

I do agree but also it feels too early. Last payout was still inflated because of higher repair traffic. The repair is mostly done now. You can already see the lower repair rate on your storagenode. That means the payout for this month and for the next month might still convince a few more nodes to leave the network. If we want to play it safe we just wait at least one more month.

I dont think this will help, people will make all more junky, good providers will go away.

This is only like 5 percent. Very disappointing tbh. Now I am sure we can go well below $1/TB. :money_mouth_face:

I also wonder if the “prepayment” nature of the payments is making folks overly optimistic on how much they will earn on a given month.

I find it very difficult to come up with appropriate words to respond to this message.

They’d probably wait at least another month before deciding if another change would help. Then likely give us a month notice. So maybe another drop in around two months? That sounds reasonable.

How long do you think Storj should wait… before making a business decision about the next possible payout change? Only considering it every six months would probobaly be too long.

That would force even my nodes out of the game. Based on my estimated payout and remaining free space I would say 5-10% reduction sounds safe to me. 20% would be my limit. Ofc your statement could still be correct. Its possible that my operating costs are on the higher end and I might have to leave the network myself. Only time will tell.

The payouts are still way too high, they need to come down. My suggestion:

Ingress $0.80/TB/month
Egress/repair $0.50/TB/month

I recall that before the HDD price spikes, the break-even for a Hetzner-hosted node at high-enough scale was ~0.8 USD/TB. Of course, not anymore

I think that’s also the point of this exercise.

If only they had listened to me last year

We wanted to postpone it as much as possible, nodes are a backbone of the network.
But to survive we were forced to cut it too..

When the utility storj coin money injectors were active with buying and holding it seems all that time payout reductions were not needed at all.
The storj coin wasn’t so bad at all for the node holders, now storj can’t pay the node holders anymore with free money they are leaving the ship.
unfortunately free money time and high payout rates for nodes are over.
With a bit more common sense, the payout reduction should have been adjusted a long time ago.

Maybe it’s the same as when people win prizes and they don’t see it like real money and spend it wastefully

You just described the whole Silicon Valley. People are paid with stock options, restricted stock units, all that jazz, that appreciate to a stupid degree by the time you get them, of course they don’t feel they earned it, it’s meaningless money, and market responds accordingly – and that’s why housing prices are stupid and a burrito costs $20. /rant

I don’t know about others, but I’ve gotten a pretty sizable increase in data stored. I was planning on selling some drives, but now I’ve put them back in service. Maybe it’s just temporary.

Depends on how far back you look:

There would be nice to combine with the number of active nodes for each period on that graph.

Is this data available anywhere?
