Russia Russia Russia, internet access

Many headlines out lately, restrictions actively in place for Whatsapp and Telegram. Mobile internet access cut off until ‘end of special operation,’ enacted in some regions.

How long before complete firewall ban of western internet?

Things that make you go ‘hummmmmm,’ in a high intonation.

What happens next??? Any ideas peeps?

Send more repair data, please.

Julio

Actually they may introduce a white-lists as in North Korea (you allowed to connect to only few explicitly listed resources, everything else is blocked), however, they are not there yet.
This would be an equivalent of a full internet isolation, which is already accounted:

Are sure about this? I never heard about this and a quick Internet search only says that Internet is heavily censored, but nowhere near as much as you make it sound like.

Ok, then they could go much further than China and North Korea.
At least analytics thinks so.

The most restricted country so far is North Korea.

You are right, I was mistaken. It’s a complicated topic, why they have a Northern and Southern Korea.
The correct gestalt is a North Korea, thanks.

My best guess, not much will change. Personally, I don’t see a future where it’s really possible for these nations to completely etablish their own silo of the internet.

I agree. However, it has been this way long before StorJ was introduced, which is why they don’t have the same complications from upholding this static restriction compared to nations which would have to move from semi-open to silo based / full lockdown.

However, I trust that StorJ follows the situation and make sure the spread of data in these places are sufficient for the network to survive any such.

First I’m proud this thread hasn’t gotten too political yet.

Second, it’s a tangent, but does anyone know why there are so many storj nodes operating in Russia? What makes it so popular there?

money is pretty good reason, for them it good passive income.

Don’t forget exchange rate of USD to Rubles, that’s a major advantage. Personal Income & cost of living is nearly third world in Russia. Finally, cost of credit in the country has become unbearable.
