Sattelite - reliability

This looks like legit question. Or isn’t it?

From what I understand the files are stored in the nodes, not in the satellites…
If anything, the problem is how to download them without satellite

That answer is a little bit outdated. Since then all satellites have been upgraded to be multiregion highly available clusters. So taking down the right data center would not take down a satellite anymore. You’d basically have to take down most of GCP.

Still, the data is only as resilient as the satellite. The “decentralization” aspect of storing the data on hundreds of nodes helps with price (cheaper than storing it in datacenters) and maybe speed (because of simultaneous uploads/downloads), but the data resiliency is the same as if it was stored on the satellites directly, without involving the nodes (and files below a certain size are stored directly on the satellite).

The sats being multiregion and clustered is great news. Being restricted to GCP could be a small risk to consider.

With all the modern tools for multicloud like terraform, the next natural step may be to orchestrate the infrastructure with a many provider approach.
