Slow response to smartctl command (linux)

Hello fellow hard disk enthusiasts! I am having some trouble with a hard drive that just seems a bit sluggish and slow compared to “normal”.
The most obvious symptom is that when I check the SMART health, the smartctl -a /dev/sdq command takes forever (maybe 30 seconds or more) to display. It says SMART Health Status: OK.
Other than that it just shows a tiny bit more utilized than other disks.
Any ideas what could cause this?

it’s silly but maybe a cabling problem.

I would agree with @EasyRhino, please try to disconnect the cable from the controller and from the disk, remove dust and reconnect again. If it wouldn’t help, please try to replace the cable.

It is a good idea but it is one of those caddy/backplane types. So no cable.
Maybe there is a problem with the connectors…
I wonder why data transfers fine but just the smartctl command is badly affected though

Perhaps the firmware is not so fast or the specialized microcontroller on the circuit board. Not all disks are equal.
