So there will be no warning for Windows 2012 R2 in the new forum thread like there was for Windows 7 in this forum thread?
Perhaps not, but maybe it could be posted. We removed the support of 2012 a quite long time ago.
See
P.S. Are you aware, that this version is 13 years old? Some come to the 6 class in the school…
So, it seems that support for Windows 7 has continued until now, but Windows 2012 R2 no longer has support?
This message in the thread “This change does not affect Windows 8.1 or newer versions” is confusing me. It seems that Windows 2012 R2 was officially supported for much longer.
Yeah, Windows 7 is insecure, you may get hacked and your data may be stolen or the hacker may install adware or spyware on your PC. Better upgrade to Windows 11 where adware and spyware is pre-installed.
Although, I understand that if a supplier drops support for the OS, it makes it difficult to keep supporting it. I don’t think it would be profitable for Storj to keep a fork of Go that supports Windows 7 or to use the old version forever.
My advice would be to use Virtual PC or equivalent to run a Linux VM inside the Windows 7 PC and run the node in that VM.
Why not just dump unsupported versions. Windows 7 is isn’t getting updates for a long time. Thus is pretty much just a riskware.
Just keep the newest version of windows running. Or switch to Linux. (I don’t even like running windows as a server because it hogs so much more resources)
No. Both not supported. They could work, but not guaranteed. Do you see the difference?
It’s removed from supported versions a while ago, but could still work, however, it’s not guaranteed.
You seems confuses “supported” vs “may work”. “Supported” means that we are putting efforts to make it work on supported versions. “May work” means that it’s up on you, we do not guarantee that it will continue to work and we are not willing to put efforts to check that.
Thank you for your response. You are right about “may work.” I probably meant “may work” as well, and you are correct. It turns out that the Storj client itself simply won’t update on this version of Windows 7, while other versions like Windows 8.1 and newer OS versions will continue receiving Storj client updates for now. Now I understand.
Do the developers see which OS versions we are using? Do they issue warnings because they have statistics showing that some users are still on outdated OS versions?
The developers probably know this, otherwise this conversation wouldn’t exist at all
We did this mistake once, but captured before a rollout, thankfully to Operators:
