I’m trying to propagate your (storj) services, and just noticed there are two web sites - storj.io and storj.dev. From quick glance I cant say what is the purpose of having two. Is there any deeper reason? Which one is better for small customers?
Hello @xsys ,
That is a good question.
storj.dev is the home of Storj documentation and deep dives into the technical aspects of Storj
I don’t know the details of why it was decided to have two separate domains but you can see they each have unique information.
Regarding your question of which one is better for small customers, it is hard to answer without knowing your goals.
If you are looking to run nodes or want technical information about Object Mount, this is a good place to start
If you have question about products, pricing or partners storj.io is the best place to start.
Does this help answer your question?
Just another theory, back in 2024 there was a concern that the TLD io
would be discontinued since its tied to British Indian Ocean territory and it was being transferred to Mauritius. IO domain is widely used in the tech industry as it also resembles Input/Output or websites that provide some sort of services.
Having hundreds of domain get stranded because of 1 deal/agreement would throw the tech industry in chaos. We thrive on technology and it was probably agreed upon by governments involved to keep the TLD alive. We can all remember what happened to the tk
TLD domains. IIRC around 100k+ or 200k+ domains were inaccessible.
In order to mitigate the fact of diverting new users to another website and not let customers believe that it could be a phishing attack, having 2 domains make sense. Also dev
suits the development aspect of the Storj.
yes I remember number of TLDs were lost, such as Soviet Union - su, Czechoslovakia - cs, Yugoslavia - yu. But it happened log time before internet became mass thing…
I was talking to folks looking for backup solution using S3, in terms of 100 TB total. They understood the pricing and expand factor, but wanted to get deeper to the decentralized idea, how it works under the hood, likely being afraid of possibility of losing their data by decentralization. I provided them the io and dev websites but the got more confused or overwhelmed by all that.
I just sent them to https://storj.dev/learn/concepts/data-structure
so hopefuly it will work.
thanks, will forward
I can’t find any refference on storj.io website to “Storagenode providers” section. If you want to provide storage space, you should know beforehand that you can do this, and than dig through docs and faqs untill you find it. It use to be a dedicated link up there in the main TABs.
