couldn’t have a backup system due to its large capacity

– Ah, never mind than, carry on.

This sounds really bad and reminds me of the famous OVH datacenter fire.

Storj would be a great way of storing critical governmental data like what the Ukraine did when they moved a lot of data to Amazon: Amazon moving 10 Petabytes of Ukrainian critical data into their cloud .

They have learned that it is a good idea to have essential data in a cloud where they cannot be destroyed even if local data gets destroyed. Storj could be a perfect offer for that many countries. Obviously Ukraine, Taiwan and South Korea come into my mind. But also as political climate has changed due to Russian aggression, other countries like the Baltic states, Moldowa etc. might be open to store critical data outside of their country.

Backups are for whimps…

But really, it is quite astounding, that they have obviously not managed to build a redundant solution. It sounds that they have like every data source in the same building:

A source from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety said, “Systems closely related to citizens’ lives, such as ‘Government24’ and ‘Bokjiro,’ are located on floors 2-4 of the headquarters and avoided the fire,” and added, “It’s a relief, at least.”

So the result could have been much worse I guess. It is really a weird situation given the fact that they have North Korea at their border and should be prepared for potential attacks on the infrastructure.
