yeah! Fractal Define R5 gang! I got the extra drive cages from my other R5, which I use for my gaming computer. The first one I bought used but was missing some sleds. it was hard to find sleds, but I found someone locally selling a used one for $50 in mint condition, so now I am blessed with two.
I used to have two EVGA PSU’s, but the one in the server fried after a brief power outage. So this was a swap from my gaming computer. I also now have a UPS plugged in.
It’s my home server. operating system is vmware esxi (I have a free license from before that was taken away). drives passed through to TrueNAS VM (I used to use openmediavault until recently). drives are shared via NFS to a different VM running storj in docker. yeah I know NFS shares are considered bad, but it’s how I split out the storage from the other radon VM activity.
it was going to be gaming computer, so the specs are… overkill in some ways. it’s also used for common stuff like plex, pihole, crypto wallets (chi and gridcoin) and immich (photo sharing).
It’s a refurb MSI carbon Z690 motherboard and a 13700K CPU, 64GB ram total (bought used)
I have an ancient emulex 10gb ethernet adaptor. SAS controller is a HP H240 (passed through to TrueNAS).
onboard m.2 256GB SSD (from a old laptop) is esxi boot.
used enterprise SATA SSD (mounted in back) is used or all the VMs.
One of the 14TB hard drives is used for the other storage, movies, photos, desktop backups. I have a USB hard drive I plug in once in a while to take an offline backup.
the SAS SSD is a 3.2TB, 7 year old HGST/sun/oracle MLC enterprise drive. ended up getting it fluke cheap after a failed ebay auction. endurance is 1DWPD so it’s going to last forever. I have it manually split into partitions for L2ARC caches for each storj drive.
The other drives for storj are a motley mix of whatever was a good deal used. Mostly SAS and some sata. For storj it’s 3x14 TB drive (the newest adds), 2x 12TB, and 2x 8TB.
