I thinked about up to 24 nodes max, Because I definitely do not want one make single point of failure to big. Also I will use my Seasonic 750W PSU for that, it has up to 16 sata, also i have 2 PCIe power to 4 sata power, this will add more 8 HDDs, And I do not like Sata splitter cables.
I will make it step by step, firstly i move there existing server with 10 nodes, then add 8 from other server, then I think i leave space for future expansions.
So when I get some HDD i have place just to plug it in.
13 posts were split to a new topic: So you actually need a fan on a CPU when you cooling the whole box?
I spent the weekend giving some lovely TLC to one of my storage arrays. Check it out!
I know itâs not quite a picture, let me know if itâs not appropriate.
Cheers

ouch. Not wonder why you opened this thread
And nice that only that is affected (yet?)
I was watching others people node until this post which remembered me that seagate worked on something like that named kinetic, but itâs an old project without news for a decade
Thatâs tight! not an inch to spare in that case. Howâs the temperature on your CPU?
the black one (pc case) has two 2609v2 at 50-60°C
the server case has one 2650v2 and about 50°C and more constantly
tomorrow I will go to that location and change both servers with 2650Lv2.
I think it would be much colder
Hey, itâs the ultimate case of âuse what you haveâ , the only way I was going to get more drives plugged in was into the (virtual) NAS, and I donât do docker shenanigans on the NAS because I donât want to mess it up and bring down the fireshare for other things⌠so there I am.
After serving for 3+ years my homemade enclosures are now retired.
Originally my nodes were hosted on raspberry pi 4, four drives and one pi per enclosure, with USB sata adapters.
When the test data started flowing, the pi4s couldnât handle the load so I bought a pcie SAS adapter and SAS to 4x drive splitters.
Elsewhere on the forum I said I wouldnât spend any more money on hardware until a new customer was announced. The enclosure I had been watching on eBay, an EMC KTN-STL3, was reduced in price so I made the purchase anyway.
The labels on the caddies arenât accurate, just the ones I got. My drives are a combination of 6 and 8 TB.

EMC KTN-STL3
Hey @storaje nice enclosure you are running.
Could you tell me something about the noise level? I am looking for some hardware that could potentially be operated much quieter as my old NetApps
@Solu It is quiet enough that when I get close I can hear the drive heads clicking over the fan.
Before I purchased it, I had done some research about it. Other people said it was surprisingly quiet, and I agree with the statement.
The fans must be temperature dependent because when I first powered the enclosure the fans started at full blast and were quite loud. Them they slowed down to a much quieter level.

Before I purchased it, I had done some research about it. Other people said it was surprisingly quiet, and I agree with the statement.
How large are the fans in the unit?
Not large, 40mm maybe. Oddly, when I looked up the replacement fan part (couldnât find any, the fans are built into the power supplies), the result brought up posts where people were complaining about noise.
If I had this in my office next to me, Iâd be annoyed. In another room, or even in a closet, I donât think noise would be an issue.
It also depends on the temperature of your environment, in my basement storage room at ~68 F (20 C), I canât hear it outside the door.
Smaller the fan, louder the noise.
Iâm following this topic since I joined as SNO, so for almost 3 years by now.
Yes, it is kind of addiction what starts in very small scale but can grow by muchâŚ
I started with a RPi 3B, mostly becouse I wanted to pick up some linux knowledge, but unfortunatelly this is a dead end for me. Iâm from the Windows world.
Frankly, I would have stucked at a very entry level, if @Vadim did not come up with his Storage Node Toolbox.
Use what you have or purchased on the previously earned money is still valid for me, so this is what I have by now:
The good, old RPi 3B is still spinning her 2TB drive. It is barely visible on the lower shelf, below the Hikvision NVR, living her pensioner style of life.
In the other corner of the room, I have an other shelfâŚ
Top left is our family NAS, top right is the Storj_Server_1 with 3 nodes (4+5+5TB). both are HP Microserver Gen8.
The bottom one is a Fujitsu P758 with i5-8500 and 16GB RAM and 4+1 nodes (10+4+4+4TB ). The +1 node is my test node with a 1TB external SSD.
I just put in a LSI SAS 9300-16i card, so there is room to add more drives later. Opsystem and all the logs are on an NVME SSD. If needed, I can upgrade RAM and CPU to an i7-8700 for example.
Everything is behind a 1000/300 Mbit fiber connection.
I like your cable management and labels. It is a little dusty though
What is at the bottom right corner of Hikvision ?
Yeah it is a bit dusty, becouse it is in the basement, next to the garage. It actually looks better then the picture. I tried to use this cabinet with the original side covers and glass door, but it did not worked. Either it was too warm or became dusty⌠I will clean it, I promise!
That is an other RPi what I used earlier as Home Assistant server, but I moved that system to the Intel NUC which is at the bottom.
The night time version looks better
