Yes and no. This is where vendors reputation matters. Temu shite — no. (Don’t buy anything on temu in the first place, but this is debate for another forum).
But e.g. GHD’D MDD brand, that is some sort of refurbished mystery meat - any day. I use them indiscriminately. For everything, not just storj, obviously. Their customer server is amazing. I did use their warranty exactly once too — disk developed few bad sectors after 4 years. I could have kept it, but I wanted to check how it works.
I asked them to send me a disk before I sent the bad one back, offered to give them payment method to charge. They suggested to buy a replacement, and sent me prepaid (!) return label for the bad disk. And as soon as they received it — issued refund promptly. They could not refund the by order — it was too long ago — so they sent cash via PayPal. Zero friction.
As I said, disks are commodities. Buy whatever. They all fail in the end. Saving $3 on a $200 disk is better than pretending that some brands are better than others.
If you needs specific features — sure, filter by that. But most people just need a box with serial connector.
I see a few SNOs posting blogs and YT videos about their setups; that’s nice, but it would be helpful for everyones if we will see articles and media about the consumer part of the Storj service.
How the performance and benefits of using Storj looks like on the other side, would be great to see.
This was my previous setup for Storj, but then I decided to move HDDs out of PC case to have better colling and possibility to access/replace drivers without screwing/unscrewing.
And has custom “UPS” made from 2 car batteries, solar power inverter and Arduino controller with relay switching power from wall socket to inverter in case of power loss.
2 car batteries can power these 3 PCs for 2-2.5 hours.
