Starting a new node, worth it in 2024? Also some setup questions

I always forget about that stats page, thanks for the reminder.

November was bad indeed. And it is hard to detect the growth in the SNOs payout totals per satellite over the course of time:

I think today a lot of SNOs are level-with (or even slightly below) the used-space they were at 90 days ago.

That’s OK. Keep the faith. Stay strong. And Colby will lead us to a bright future
where money grows on trees and we only have to reach out and grab it! :christmas_tree: :money_mouth_face:

Recently there was the link to this post:

My calculation from the stats page is saying that in 2024 so far we are below that required target. And this is average only. Summing up only the November values returns only around half of the target amount.

And what is worse, I don’t see the promised growth indicators to fill those gaps. There was more traction, more usage and wider adoption expected after all those marketing efforts during the year. Payouts to SNOs should steadily increase with growing number of paying customers.

Since that post was written over a year ago
they bought Valdi and PeteGene: using a lot of their own tokens. So I’m sure any plans they had at the end of 2023, no matter how solid they were, are completely different now. Plus after Storj made the plea to bring more nodes and more space online
 the community did so
but the demand went to Select
so the public payments are now just spread over more SNOs. A lot of Chia refugees also arrived to swell our node count and dilute things.

TL;DR; I can’t really blame them for stagnant payouts: because they’re still trying to find new customers while taping three different companies together. I think we have to be patient.

So how come they are incorporating new companies each year, but one dedicated to private Storj cloud solutions they don’t?
If we only would had a good reliable storage solution for individuals, our nodes would had filled up verry quickly.
As we all seen, businesses search all sorts of certifications. Private individuals don’t. They just want a good cloud solution to easily store their files, pics, docs etc., including a website app, a desktop app and a smartphone app.
Why Storj dosen’t get involved into this? They keep saying the team is limited, and this requires and entire new company. Well, they keep incorporating companies and more staff. So
? When an official Storj cloud app?

I mean that one is fairly easy to answer: B2B is way easier than B2C. Selling to 10 big clients is much less effort than selling to 100,000 consumers. You’d be competing with every other consumer storage company. Dropbox offers 1TB for what, $10/month? Backblaze is $5/month for unlimited storage for backups. So Storj would have to undercut them by a fair bit to get people to switch. So offering, what $1/TB/month? That doesn’t leave much margin at all.

Enterprise is different because there saving 5% is a huge savings. And a single customer can bring in huge revenue.

You compare apples with oranges. Those are centralised solutions. We offer something different, unique. We don’t have to compete with anyone by price.
Selling this to individuals is much less effort than to companies. Just read trough this forum for how many requested this, without witnessing big add campaigns or targeted marketing.
Individuals who search for this type of service don’t have to convince their bosses or the admin board of the benefits. They are it enthusiasts that just research this solution and undestand it, and make up their mind on their own.
Take Internext for ex. They had like 10 guys managing all the stuff
the token thing, the website, desktop and smartphone app; and all worked. I don’t know if they are still around, but the aplication worked. Just a simple solution for storing files. And I believe the smartphone app was made and mantained by one guy. So it can be done with a small team if you hire the right people.

Fine. But they also said that $130K payout number is effectively required so running nodes remains viable. If it is lower than that with their own words, it is not viable.
Effectively SNOs pay for the acquisitions, if like what your answer sounds like, they used the tokens for the acquisitions instead of meeting their own minimum payout total.

Also fine. But the number of nodes does not have an impact on the paid total. If the target is to pay $130k then you can pay it no matter how many nodes are on.

And this was the fear when Select was introduced. Exactly this. This questions if the public network features are properly aligned for the demand. And we see they are not. They test on public and move their data to Select. So the product offering is wrong. The features are wrong. Especially the missing certification. And we had it already when Select started with the first company from the health care industry. They don’t care about all the fancy technical features and advantages of the public network, if the proper certifications are not there. And with proper certifications Storj might be even be able to charge higher prices. I mean look what other charge for their object storage with the proper feature alignment: Object storage pricing - WAW3-1 Cloud | CloudFerro

And ok, Vivint went to Select, to be fair we were never really promised the deal would be signed. But if I remember correctly, we were told 2 other things repeatedly: 1. There are other (large) customers in the pipeline besides the back then unknown Vivint customer and they were onboarding new customers all the time.

or this

or this

This sounds like growth to be expected but now it is December and I don’t really see it has happened.

This should not stop them to reach the total target. But with more nodes the target should be even higher

It is obvious that they are working hard. We have seen lots of efforts over the year. I do not deny that. But if the results are not what you have expected then you need to ask yourself if you are on the right path.
I mean look at this:
Apr 30:

and today:

You never know, if the displayed data is correct or if there is another glitch, but from this chart we have effectively lost over 2PB of customer data since Apr 30th.

Maybe they need to buy a company like that. And maybe even others.

I agree. But for that the offering must be aligned with the demand. And as we see the huge companies we would like to see, they demand certifications, certifications and certifications. The prefer to go to Select which has drawbacks over the public network because it does have the necessary certification.

We will never see growth unless we target the individuals. Make the public network people’s choice, and businesses will come too. Small businesses. We have to understand that big companies will always go to select network. Storj tries to target one type of clients with 2 services, instead of targeting all type of clients with these 2 pretty different solutions.

Why do we need to implement an app for consumers?
You already can:

  1. Install the web app from the satellite UI
  2. Use rclone and their rclone mount command
  3. Use Photos+
  4. Use S3Drive
  5. etc.

You would have an consumer application right now using many third-party apps available on the market. There are a whole companies who working on consumer apps, we shouldn’t spread our forces so wide and try to spend much more resources on that market, with much lower revenue and much more problems. It may change in the future though, but right now I wouldn’t expect that.

I have just looked up for Dropbox alternatives. And there is one thing that is interesting: The price you can charge to these customers. Here is one example, sorry it is in German from Dropbox-Alternativen: 20 zuverlĂ€ssige und sichere Anbieter - GrĂŒnder.de

Your Secure Cloud

50 Gigabytes for €7,99. This turns into appr. €160 per TB if my math is correct.
Well this is interesting

That should bring a lot of new customers. To reach the $130K goal they could even offer free space to the existing Valdi and CunoFS customer so they can test more and eventually turn into paying customers for the storage offering.
What I don’t understand:
If you you check storage prices on VALDI | Affordable, reliable GPUs example 1 TB storage and 1 TB egress, then you’ll see

Approx. monthly cost: $20.00

and when you do the same on What you'll save when you switch to Storj then you’ll see

Storj Total $11.14

I mean maybe it would be more beneficial if Valdi customer have attractive pricing for storage too? And as said even free for testing around to turn them into paying customers?

Why? Free space has doubled in spite of that

"Storj achieved remarkable growth in 2024, increasing its Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR) sevenfold. The last six months of the year saw consistent monthly growth of approximately 20%. During the year we completed two major acquisitions of Valdi.ai and PetaGene, closed our largest customer and channel partner engagements, and received extensive recognition from the Fast Company World Changing Ideas award to Ventana Research’s Digital Innovation Award.

Storj is celebrating cloud object storage customer growth, particularly in media and broadcast entertainment industries, coupled with rapidly rising demand for on-demand GPUs propelled by AI innovation. The company also recently launched the Channel First partner program to support its award-winning commitment to channel development, recognized by the Inc. Power Partner 2024 award.

AFAIK the free space shown includes the Select network, and the target total is the amount that makes it viable to run a node on the network. It is my understanding that from the SNO perspective to remain viable with more nodes, the target would need to be higher as it gets distributed between more nodes.

As select is running on US1 we can estimate the size of it by comparing US1 free space number to the other satellites. It seems to be neglectible atm

I think we already mentioned this before, but apparently have to reiterate that everything you are suggesting is already being done. Our Sales and Marketing team are doing a great job cross promoting Storj with the customers of our new acquisitions, and of course sales leads are being offered free trials to run POCs if needed so they can sufficiently test our product before committing.
We will not discuss specific pricing offered to enterprise customers, contracts are being custom fitted to every customer so our offerings are competitive in the market.
