Storagenode Payout Update: 2026 September

I don’t expect you to account for this. I expect you to understand that if you want 20TB of storage added to the network your options are:

  1. go out and buy a 20TB drive
    or
  2. pay someone that already has that drive to rent it to you

If you do the math and you can cover the purchase yourself, cool, go ahead and do it. If someone else does the math and offers to rent it to you, also cool, go ahead and do it.

Willing to rent it to you doesn’t mean for free. If there are people that want to do that, also cool, go ahead and do it.

Just please (again, in the nicest way possible) stop pretending that there is an infinite supply of free always-on servers. If you can’t pay X for the storage/egress/repair, it’s up to the one choosing to be an SNO if that’s acceptable or not. If it covers his/hers expenses he’ll do it (ie every single piece of hardware I use for storj (dedicated to storj) has already been paid for by storj, because the price for me was right).

If you do the math and say that for the next 10 years the network can sustain itself while we replace SNO provided resources with Storj’s self-hosted, self-managed resources, ALSO COOL, go ahead and do it.

I clearly understand your motivation. However, it’s not what we are offering. We never applied to the attraction of heavy hardware owners, for that we have a Select.
For the Global network we want many small independent operators, who share their not used capacity to reduce their bills.
Nothing has changed. Yes, some can get a profit from running an online hardware specifically for Storj for many reasons. Obviously, your reasons are outside of that.
You made a decision, you made investments, and they are not payed itself. Sorry, but we warned you multiple times.

I put it in bold, just to make it clearer.

Ok, and now it’s not anymore. What’s a problem? It’s kind of.. expected?

But… there kinda is an infinite supply. Storj has always had more people offering space than they needed. And every year more servers, and storage (and free space) is brought online.

And for whatever reasons that space is brought online… people will be looking for ways to offset those costs. Storj may not have enough customers… but they don’t seem to need to worry about SNOs.

He clearly states that that’s not what they’re doing…

…right?

No problem. I fully agree with you. and @Roxor as well.

I’m very sorry to have to set the record straight. But I’m also an SNO, and it just so happens that I’m familiar with the internal processes and how expensive this is from both sides.
I don’t want to leave any illusions about this.

@Alexey, could you please also share with the team that it would be incredibly helpful and professional if they announced every month when exactly they plan to distribute payouts? Currently, SNOs have to constantly monitor their wallets and the forum for days (as we’ve done for 4 days since the beginning of the September payouts; in August it was the same) just to sell ASAP, given that STORJ token is very volatile and can pump or dump by 100-200% in a single day.

It is quite frustrating, and I don’t see any reason why the person handling payments can’t create a dedicated forum topic to announce the estimated payout times.

For example, it could look something like this:

  • “Tomorrow at 3 PM ET, we will start sending payouts.”

  • Next day: “We are starting payouts at 3 PM ET.”

  • Few hours later that day: “Payouts are paused for today. We plan to continue on Monday at 3 PM ET.”

  • On Monday: “We will continue sending payouts at 3 PM ET.”

  • Few hours later: “All payouts have been sent. See you next month.”

If the team cannot or doesn’t want to pay in stablecoins or ETH, please at least make the payout process more predictable. Right now, it feels like a complete mess.

That is not in our hands. We run the script to calculate the payout. We communicate how much token we need. We wait for the tokens to arrive and start the payout. We have no control over when this happens. At least for now. We are working on owning the entire process from end to end ourself. I am not sure how long that is going to take.

I bet some SNOs are gonna reroll their ETH payout address until they get one alphabetically ‘early’. So if this happens again they’ll get paid days before everyone else :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I can only partially understand the reasoning behind not sending an email. Nevertheless, years ago, a notification bell was introduced in the dashboard. At first, people wondered what it was for, but it was never actually used.

This would have been the ideal solution.

Not informing the node operators at all is grossly negligent and unfair.

They will buy the drive at a current market price, ship it to the location and then pay $250 an hour (one hour minimum) to have it replaced. If it is still under warranty, then packing and shipping it back to the vendor will be another $250/hour + shipping fees.
The vendor will then ship a replacement and they will store it at the location for a monthly fee, to have on hand should another drive fail.

I offer to do that for a monthly price instead of charging by the hour. Now Storj (=company) just has to run the numbers and see if it’s better to buy that drive, or rent it monthly.

Metamask Wallet on Android notifies me when there is movement in my wallet.

Yes it is unfair. We simply don’t have time. We have more work than people and that means low and medium priority is getting pushed out. The highest priority is to get through chapter 11.

You’re doing a solid job under difficult circumstances. It actually doesn’t matter what you do: with so many SNOs out there… one of them will always be crying for some reason. Luckily randos-on-the-Internet aren’t too hard to ignore… :squinting_face_with_tongue:

I am happy for you. Does it wake you up when the payment arrives three hours after midnight your local time?

Would you stay awake if you knew the payment is in progress? So your point is moot.

Of course I would. That’s exactly the point you missed.

While your concerns are valid I hope you recognize how much free time you have.
