As far as I understand, the scan at startup is just a safety check to avoid running out of disk space in case the node has wrong statistics about stored content.

It happened to me, I accidentally deleted the databases of a node that had the scan disabled. After restarting it it started accepting uploads since it didnât know how much data it had stored (databases missing). I restarted it once with the scan enabled and everything went back to normal.
Would have been a different story hadnât I caught it pretty earlyâŚ
