This would significantly increase the demand for decentralized storage.
What are you basing this claim on?
Yeah, there are already tons of apps that mount and use S3 storage. Why do you think we need another?
Hello @sonybeach,
Welcome to the forum!
Storj doesn’t presented on the consumer market yet, it’s for Enterprises and Developers who builds consumer apps. Consumers may use Storj too, but they would miss a lot of consumer features, including branded apps.
As mentioned by others - there are a lot of s3-compatible and even Storj-native apps, such as:
- rclone and its
rclone mount
command orrclone sync
orrclone copy
if you would like to backup your files from your devices, orrclone bisync
if you want to keep it in sync on all devices (you would run it with a scheduler), rclone also has a GUI and they has a mobile apps too: Round Sync - Rclone for Android; - Mountain Duck,
- cunoFS,
- S3Drive,
- Photos+,
- Storj Mobile,
- Storj Console,
- etc.
I mentioned only a small amount of such apps.
However, you may build your own too, more apps is better.
Most similar to a simple client is - S3Drive. But I still couldn’t connect it to my storJ account, except for the Bucket name - I don’t know where to get the rest of the information to fill it in.
And this seems to me to be the problem, without a mass user who is used to only clicking “next” - the demand for storJ will increase much more slowly.
Personally, I used to keep only the most important files in DropBox with a volume of 0.3 TB, why should I pay for the 2 TB tariff? There are other situations, there are many of them, when you understand that you are not paying fairly, and my resources, as well as HDD resources, climate impact, etc., are used irrationally.
I would recommend to setup rclone and import configuration there.
S3 integration works, you just need to provide the Access Key, the Secret Key and the Endpoint and start to use it with Storj, however, their own implementation of S3 protocol is limited, the rclone’s one - opens all features. You may link all buckets with their own implementation of S3, but I believe it’s a premium feature.
The rclone’s one does not have this limit, I think.
I personally use RCX and Round Sync, since I have an Android phone. However, S3Drive have a great feature to backup your media selecting needed Albums, not folders, like with the first two.
It’s not necessary - there are plenty of Open Source and free tools to allow you to use the S3 integration in your favor.
Besides that - every app has own requirements and setup tweaks, it’s ok, because they are generic.
