Please come back, random uploaders

For the last 6+ months we’ve had daily upload spikes: starting around 8:15pm-EST/early-morning-EU. They’ve been the bulk of network growth.

But a week ago they effectively stopped. You can see the last spike a week ago in Th3Vans charts (and how they’ve been daily going back months).

Without those fresh bits: bloom filters have been catching up: my rough guess is Th3Van is down around 30TB from his peak? And overall growth has plateaued too?

I don’t know what changed… but please come back random uploaders! :winking_face_with_tongue: :folded_hands:

Gotta bring back these TrueNAS backup users.

Could be one big customer who left as well. Whatever, storj marketing team again proved to be the company’s biggest problem.

Nah. Customers are happy:

Why are you guys/gals worried? The servers are already powered on, so even if a single byte comes in per month, it’s still free money.

/s (for those that need it)

All TrueNAS customers received the email that they are excluded, these all old posts.

one petabyte gone

I understand what you’re saying. But after I got the initial email, I deleted my truenas backups and account immediately. Not that I was angry or dissatisfied (maybe a bit disappointed) but because of the extra costs (and before I forget about it, wouldn’t be the first time I forget about something and get confronted with it with the next bill). For me it wasn’t worth it, so I deleted everything (without complaining) before the correction was made.
I still like storj and the original idea behind it (don’t like select part but what I’m gonna do about it). I manage multiple nodes who are several years old and even was briefly part of the V2 network (long time ago). And before someone suggest I could use the earned crypto from my nodes to pay the bill: “I don’t like the hassle of crypto”. I check ones per month if the new payout did happen, but that’s it. Maybe ones a year I clear out my wallet, but at this point almost 2 years has past.
Why I’m a node operator when I don’t use the payout? Because the hardware is already running, online and available. And still like the idea of the public storj network (using unused space that’s already online). And again, the crypto is more of a hassle and time consuming burden. Maybe it’s time to automate those things for myself…

For now I don’t use storj anymore for my truenas backups, maybe I’ll come back (or not), who knows. For now I’m only a node operator and not a public network user and that’s okay.

In fact, as an SNO, you can also benefit as a customer: set up an account’s deposit address for your node using the zkSync Era wallet feature. As an SNO, you’ll earn 3% on top of payouts because you use zkSync Era, and as a customer, you’ll earn 10% on top of each deposit because you use STORJ tokens, and your account will be exempt from the minimum monthly fee. As a TrueNAS customer, you can also lock in your current price or upgrade to a tiered pricing system. If a large portion of your bill is segment fees, you’ll significantly reduce your costs by upgrading to either Active Archive or Global Collaboration. Upgrading to Regional Workflow requires creating a separate bucket and re-uploading your data, as it’s physically located in SOC2 data centers in the US.

With the TrueNAS customers, while @Alexey may feel that the TrueNAS people are happy, they are not. They were told about the price increase in a first email telling them the cost was going up 10 fold. It wasn’t until much later that a second email came out making the correction. You did read @DutchSNO posted above. This isn’t the only person who took this kind of action.

Some of the damage you are seeing was self-inflicted. Storj needs to make sure mistakes like these never happen again, I know it cost Storj many customers.

I personally do not use Storj as a backup location, but I have a few small nodes running and I’m active on the TrueNAS forums. All I can say is what I read, but many users are looking for alternative storage solutions, simply due to that first email sent out. And I’m not here to debate what I have written here, I’m only stating what I have been reading on the TrueNAS forum.

they may be old posts but in the several hours it took you guys to figure it out a lot of us panicked at the idea of getting charged $50 for what was ~5-10 of usage logged in and deleted everything because we got a whole 7 days notice of it happening.

So no, they are not ‘old news’ or ‘old posts’ they are a result of some of the worst customer communication I’ve seen from anyone in ages.

@JoeSchmuck and @trek-e
Yes, I understand your frustration; mistakes happen. We fixed this issue as soon as it was discovered. It was unexpected, so there was an error in the messages being sent—they were scheduled automatically.
We try to avoid mistakes, but they can still happen, and we apologize for the inconvenience. I also received an update after the incident.

@Alexey I’m not saying Storj didn’t address it nor am I pointing fingers here, mistakes happen, I think we all know that.

I’m just trying to correct the perception of your previous posting, were they old or new postings? The first I heard about the price increase was on 1 June which would ne an old posting, however the thread was quite active, and the first I heard of the correction was on 24 June (1 week before the deadline) which would be a new posting. That is a long time for users to ponder the thought of the price increase. It was valid in their minds for a long time (3 weeks) until the correction came out. Hopefully these users will return, should they desire that.

I have nothing against Storj, I will run a few nodes until I stop, likely when I move since the servers will not be online for possibly a week or more which would kill my node accounts. Life happens.

Cheers

It needs 30 days offline for disqualification, so your nodes will likely make it.

Thank you @alpharabbit , I thought it was something much shorter like 7 days. The time will depend on the internet provider at the new place, but knowing 30 days is the limit, that is very good to hear. If I go without internet for 10 days it will drive me mad.

I had noticed on my nodes that daily bandwidth usage decreased in a smoothish line from June 1 to June 29.

I mean that when we noticed the error - we sent a new email with the explanation, that it’s a mistake. TrueNAS users shouldn’t receive neither the first nor the freezing warning emails. So, if there are TrueNAS customers, who received a first email too, then there perhaps another issue, like the account was not registered via TrueNAS, but just have buckets, created from TrueNAS, and the account is a regular Storj account.
I would like to suggest them to contact support, to allow us to update their account details. However, I notified the team, that this is a possible issue.

@Roxor If you are in the US, it would be interesting to know if you had the same decline as we had in Europe. Yesterday June 29 looks like a ‘final’ day and now almost all traffic is gone. I got nodes on five different subnets with no neighbours and the total traffic is now flat-lined at 15Mbit dwn/15Mbit up - that is the total for 5 subnets in Europe. Before back in May I could have 350Mbit dwn/150Mbit up at peak hours. From the beginning of June I’ve seen the traffic decline and yesterday I had the last whimp of traffic - now almost nothing. It can’t be a coincidence that the new pricing starts from tomorrow.

It could just be that people are on vacation and backup systems don’t have any more stuff to back up for the moment.

It wouldn’t explain a very sharp decline, but rather generally less activity.

Sometimes a lot of data comes, sometimes a lot of data goes. It has been this way always with StorJ, there has never been a normal, only vaguely similar trendlines on limited time periods.

I get paid every month; I’m pretty stoked about it
