I think this is more significant… than I would have guessed. I understand that the network is still going to try to spread data around to protect it… but… in the end you can’t beat some closer-to-the-S3-Gateway nodes simply having lower latency in most races. It must add up.
These are crazy times… I have some nodes using 8 TB Samsung SSDs. I paid €300 years ago, now the lowest price I see is €1699.

I’m not sure I would trust some random guy with a colocated server with my data. Running a satellite takes real expertise, and running HA isn’t as trivial as it sounds.
Things break, and fixing a split-brain HA database usually isn’t a piece of cake, and that is just one of the problems a satellite operator would run into.
It would be a small community of experts like myself who are well versed.
I didn’t sum it up yet. Out of my head I would say 5 PB. Anyway yes I will consider this.
It is difficult now because of the “suggestion” that was spoken out loud. Thats the point I didn’t understand from the beginning. On the very first day I just answered a question that a payout cut is a possibilty but I didn’t meantion any numbers. A few people already “suggested” to leave the network. That was way to early and sends a clear message. Don’t blame me for that. I will just act on that message.
Many other SNO did the right thing. Keep silent, observe, ask questions, come up with some alternative ideas that might also work, find a solution to the problem at hand, mutal understanding that we all want to keep the network allive even if some of us might be forced to shutdown. The shutdown question can wait until we have a more solid number. I liked these conversations a lot and will try my very best to represent these positions internally.
If we’ve understood each other, you’ll realize this was just an example; 5Pb doesn’t make a fundamental difference. I’m glad we took this nuance into account.
I agree, under the stress of the initial discussion, it could have been rude, and I’d like to remind you that most of the “major SNOs” who spoke out are not members of our group, which I officially represent. We’ve decided not to “spam” you with the same inconsistent messages, so I speak for everyone in our group (except for a couple of people who want to speak up and have every right to do so).
As for your lack of information and inability to provide any data, there’s no problem either; the situation is clear, the court is in charge, we all understand.
We all want the network to work, and our main message is to listen to rational arguments, not idealize the network of your dreams. We are also part of those “useful opinions” that should help you save the company and prevent the network from crashing.
I propose a new motto for the Storj network: “Keep silent, store for free”.
I propose a new company name as well: Freej (we pronounce it FreeJay).
