Unpacking the Storj Umbrella: Official Product Names and Offerings

The name Storj DCS originated from a time when Storj was a single entity with a unified distributed network and object storage as its sole offering.

However, the landscape has undergone a significant transformation. Today, the Storj umbrella encompasses multiple brands, including Valdi and Petagene, and a diverse range of services such as public storage network vs. select storage network, object storage vs. file storage, and GPU computation. There is probably more to come.

I’m curious to know if Storj DCS is still a valid product name, as it appears to be no longer in use. At least I cannot remember that I have heard that term from Storj officials recently anymore. Given the expansion of the Storj ecosystem, the term ‘Storj’ has become increasingly ambiguous, encompassing a much broader range of products and services. Therefore, I’d like to know what the official product names are for each of these offerings, to ensure clarity and accuracy when referring to them."

Yes, “DCS” is not used anymore, we use only name “Storj”. These two new departments keeps their names and sites.

So “Storj” will be either perceived as the company, as token or as distributed cloud object storage which will be under the name “Select network”(?) for the network ran by Commercial Node Operators and the name “Public network”(?) for the SNO network?
Valdi → Distributed GPU computing?
Petagene or CunoFS → Distributed File storage?

Like this?

I think so. Maybe there would be some clarifications anyway.
The Select network is called Storj Select, the Public network I prefer to call Storj Global rather than Storj Public, because it is better differentiate the purpose.

That’s interesting. But Storj Global is not official (yet)?
The thing is at one point Storj Select will be global as well, so it might be not a good name for differentiating. But Storj Public is not really good either.

It was determined by the executives at one time that the branding needed to be simplified. We retired DCS and Tardigrade, and focus went to just Storj.

I read somewhere that the company could have a name change to better encompass the multiple products it now sells. However, changing the name of anything is an expense. A lot.of documentation, marketing literature, amd the like are all branded Storj. So, whatever they decide to do, and when, will come after a lot of thought and consideration.

I understand that. However generally I liked the idea with Tardigrade to distinguish between the company, the token and the service. But as long as Storj DCS was the only offering switching to Storj DCS or even only Storj was not an issue. But now we have multiple offerings, names, departments, services. Some with Storj in their name, some not. So it did not become simpler at the current stage.
